Cairo Metro Line 3 – Phase 2 (Abassiya / Al-Ahram) - Egypt

Transportation   ::  Completed Projects   ::  2014  ::

Client: National Authority for Tunnels – Ministry of Transport
Contractors: JV Vinci – Arab Contractors – Orascom Construction.
This phase extends from Abassiya station to Al-Ahram station. It is 7.7 km long and consists of 4 underground stations (Cairo Fair, Stadium, Kolyat El Banat, and El Ahram, as well as 7 ventilation facilities. The implementation of this phase began on 1/7/2009 and opened in May 2014. 2 TBM were used simultaneously to implement the second phase tunnel, using the TBM "Nefertari" due to the different soil nature in the earthwork of the distance from Abbasiya Station to Cairo Fair Station (sand soil). The TBM "Imhotep" used to implement the earthwork from Cairo Fair Station to Haroun Station (muddy soil).

It is worth mentioning that Line 3 extends from Imbaba and El Mohandseen under the Nile bottom down to Adly Mansour Interchange Station.
Line 3 is important because it is the first cross-axis to make the connection between the east and west of Cairo. It achieves interconnection with the various modes of transport through:
Nasser Station: Connect with the first line.
Attaba and Cairo University stations make a connection with Line 2.
Adly Mansour Station: Connection with the LRT (Al-Salam, 10th of Ramadan, the New Administrative Capital).
Wady El Nil Station: Provides exchange service with Monorail of West Nile.
Stadium Station: The service will be exchanged with Monorail of East Nile.
It is 41.2 km long and has 34 stations (21 underground stations, 2 at-grade stations, and 11 elevated stations).
