Eng.Hossam El Din El Rifi, Senior Vice-Chairman of the Arab Contractors Company, visitedTanzania to follow up on the work progress of Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plantand Dam Project, which is being implemented by the Arab Contractors Company andEl Sewedy Electric Company on Rufiji River in Tanzania. He was accompanied byAC Board Members: Eng. Ayman Attia, Eng. Hassan Moustafa, Eng. Tarek Khedr andEng. Dina Adel. Thisvisit comes within the framework of the periodic and continuous follow-up ofthe work of this giant project on the ground, with an emphasis on theimportance of the project to achieve development in Tanzania.Theywere accompanied by Eng. Darem Debsi - Representative of the JV, Eng. MohamedSamaha – JV Manager, Eng. Osama Shawkt - Project Director for Civil Works, Eng.Khaled Badawy – Equipment Manager, Eng. Hassan Gharib – Planning and Follow-UpManager and Eng. Ahmed Dessouki - Manager of Arab Contractors Tanzania LimitedCompany.Eng.Ayman Attia, who is supervising the project, indicated that the projectconsists of a main dam with a total length of 1025 m, which is complete, and acapacity to impound approximately 34 billion m3 of water. Besides, theconstruction of a hydropower plant with a capacity of 2115 MW. The plant islocated on Rufiji River in Selous Game Reserve at Morogoro, south-west of Dares Salam (the largest city and commercial capital of Tanzania), where 14.5billion m3 of water was stored in the dam lake. The water reached a level of164.5 m above sea level, as the minimum operating level for turbines is 163 mabove sea level.Theimplementation rate of the main dam reached 100%, the hydropower generationplant reached 80.43% (91% civil works and 75% electromechanical works), theintake works reached 100%, there were 3 tunnels for the passage of thenecessary water to the turbine building at 100%, an electricity interconnectionstation at 99.37%, 4 saddle dams to form the water reservoir at 97.4%, apermanent concrete bridge on Rufiji River at 100%, the construction ofpermanent roads to facilitate movement and link the components of the projectat 62%, and the permanent camp to the customer at 98.3%.It isworth noting that the implementation rates of the project have achieved anoticeable increase, as all elements of the project have reached advancedimplementation stages, as the civil works for the dam body have been completed, amounting to 1.5 million m3, and all the dam gates have been installed, tested, and operated with high efficiency. The intake and tunnel works leading to theturbines have also been completed. It isnoteworthy that the work on the subsidiary dams was completed, and the amountof backfill used amounted to 5.5 million cubic meters, in addition to 350thousand m3 of concrete, where the work on the main body of the debris dams 2,3, and 4 is completed, and the compact concrete dam No. 1 was also completed, with implementation rates higher than planned and of high quality, and the roadwork is ongoing above the saddle dams.Thework is ongoing in the main structure of the turbine building, which is one ofthe most important units of the project, where the civil works of the turbineassembly building (Erection Bay) have been completed and 3 giant cranes havebeen installed, with a load of 400 tons per winch, in preparation forinstalling the main units of the turbines, as the installation of the 9turbines is underway and the installation of 27 transformers, towers, andinterconnection lines between the turbine building station and theinterconnection station has been completed. Thefirst phase of concrete works has also been completed; the interior andexterior finishing of the entire building are being completed; and dredgingwork is underway at high rates of implementation. It isalso worth noting that the work on the main bridge linking the two banks ofRufiji River has been completed, which is one of the most important elements inJulius Nyerere Dam project due to the importance it represents for transportingparts for turbines of large sizes and weights. Therefore, this bridge isconsidered the largest bridge in Tanzania in terms of load capacity. It allowsthe passage of loads of up to 300 tons, and its length is 250 meters. It isbuilt on only two columns with a height exceeding 50 meters above the surfaceof the river, which makes this bridge one of the most important constructionlandmarks in the country, especially since it will be one of the main parts ofthe international road linking Tanzania and Mozambique. Thecompany delegation praised the company’s employees for carrying out therequired tasks at high rates of implementation and with standards commensuratewith safety and quality in accordance with international standards and withmodern implementation methods, as the number of working hours on the project sofar has reached 114 million hours, which won the praise and admiration of theTanzanian people and government, which expressed welcoming the participation ofthe Arab Contractors Company in the state’s development projects.
