The Ministry of Transport, represented by the National Authority for Tunnels , signed an agreement with Siemens Mobility, Arab Contractors, and Orascom Construction to study extending the High-Speed Rail line into Alexandria. This extension would create 4 stations on the Green Line of the High-Speed Rail network: Borg El Arab, Stadium, Al Amreya, and finally, Alexandria Station currently under construction within Lake Mariout.
The signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Tarek Goueily - Chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels, and Eng. Hassan Ibraheem - Board Member of the Arab Contractors Company.
The agreement aims to explore the feasibility of adding new stations within Alexandria, either to connect the High-Speed Rail Line to the existing Misr Station, allowing interchange with conventional trains and the Alexandria Metro at a single station, or to extend the high-speed rail line to connect directly with the fourth high-speed rail line (Abu Qir - Port Said).
The study also includes connecting Ain Sokhna Port to Alexandria Port, which would enhance the freight transport network and bolster Egypt's role as a regional logistics hub for the Middle East, providing a parallel railway link to the Suez Canal.
This step comes as part of the expansion of the High-Speed Rail network, the largest in Africa and among the largest globally. The network aims to serve up to 90% of Egypt's population, contributing to reduced carbon emissions, improved freight transport efficiency, and new opportunities for economic development.
The study is expected to bring high-speed rail services closer to the heart of Alexandria, serving more than 5 million citizens by providing faster and more efficient transportation connecting the city to the rest of the country.
