The Prime Minister follows up on projects to revive Downtown and improving the visual image of Khedivial Cairo

Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly and his entourage inspected the work progress on the project to improve the visual image of Khedivial Cairo during their tour today. The Prime Minister emphasized that the development works in the Khedival Cairo and Downtown areas aim to preserve the architectural and urban character of this historic region without altering its civilizational structure. Dr. Mostafa Madbouly underscored the importance of monitoring the revival projects in Khedival Cairo and Downtown, especially since these areas represent a significant part of Egypt’s history. Eng. Sherif El Sherbiny -Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, emphasized that the Khedivial Cairo Revival Project aims to restore the architectural and heritage character of downtown Cairo, remove visual distortions and encroachments, and standardize shop signs. The work includes the restoration of distinctive facades to preserve the original architectural style. The architectural condition of each property is being studied to determine the best method for restoration work. All damaged parts are being removed, and missing architectural decorations, corniches, and ornaments are being replaced. This is carried out by specialized technicians and under the supervision of engineers from the Housing and Utilities Directorate. The facades are also being treated using the finest weather-resistant materials to restore the properties to their original character. Major General Dr. Ibrahim Saber - Cairo Governor emphasized that the Khedivial Cairo Revitalization Project is one of the national projects receiving significant attention from the political leadership. It aims to revitalize Downtown Cairo as an architectural masterpiece and an open heritage museum, while repurposing historic buildings and enhancing Cairo’s status as a capital of culture, art, and tourism. Cairo Governor added that several areas in Cairo will be transformed into open-air museums, and other areas will be designated for pedestrians, such as Al Sherifin Triangle, after the completion of the upgrade of the building facades there, as well as the Stock Exchange area. He pointed out the work phases on the visual image improvement project, which includes the first phase of Tahrir Square which has been completed, then the second phase from Talaat Harb Square to Moustafa Kamel Square, passing through Qasr El Nile Street, which connects the two squares, and its implementation has also been completed. Then the third phase, which starts from Tahrir Square to Talaat Harb Square, passing through Talaat Harb Street, as work is ongoing, and all work is being carried out under the technical support of the National Authority for Urban Coordination, and with the full supervision and periodic follow-up of the Housing and Utilities Directorate in Cairo Governorate. Cairo Governor declared that the development work of the first phase, which involves the re-use of Al Sharifin Street, has been completed, while the second phase is ongoing, which includes the re-use of Al Qadi Al Fadil Alley and its branches, in addition to developing the facades of buildings, streets, and surrounding landscape. Besides, he explained that the implementation of the third phase is ongoing, which includes the revival of Elwy Street and its branches, and Boursa Triangle project is scheduled to be completed by the end of this September. Cairo Governor stated that the governorate’s executive bodies is committed to providing support to restore the distinctive archaeological features of Khedivial Cairo, revitalize the area, restore its cultural role, enhance its tourism importance and re-plan the area as a cultural tourism destination.
