Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport witnesses the signing of the infrastructure contract for the rehabilitation of Alexandria Raml Tram

Within the framework of the directives of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi - President of the Arab Republic of Egypt to expand the establishment of a network of sustainable, green, environmentally friendly mass transportation to facilitate the movement of citizens and provide them with distinguished services, and in light of the Ministry of Transportation’s plan to implement a number of green mass transportation projects in Alexandria, as it is the second most populated governorate. Lieutenant General Eng. Kamel El Wazir - Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, witnessed the signing of the contract for implementing the infrastructure works for the rehabilitation of Alexandria Raml Tram between the National Authority for Tunnels and the JV of the Arab Contractors and Hassan Allam. The contract was signed by Dr. Tarek Goueili - Chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels, Eng. El Sayed Al Wazir -Vice Chairman of the Arab Contractors Company, and Mr. Hassan Allam - Chairman of Hassan Allam Company. This was in the presence of Eng. Hassan Ibrahim – Board Member of the Arab Contractors Company, Eng. Ahmed Shawky – Manager of the JV, Eng. Sherif Tarek – Manager of JVs Department, and Eng. Alia Abdel Azim – Manager of Contracting Department at the Arab Contractors Company. The Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development, Minister of Industry and Transport, confirmed that the implementation of the rehabilitation of Alexandria Raml Tram comes within the Ministry of Transport’s plan to implement a number of green mass transportation projects in Alexandria, as it is the second most populated governorate. He expressed his happiness that two national Egyptian companies are implementing this project, which will reach a length of 13.2 km after its rehabilitation and includes 24 stations (5.7 km surface - 7.3 km elevated - 276 meters underground). It will start from Victoria Station and then extend west to pass through the areas of (San Stefano - Janaklees– Al Wizara - Rushdi - Moustafa Kamel - Sidi Gaber - Sporting - Ibrahimia - Raml). Passenger transport service will also be exchanged with Alexandria Metro regional line at Victoria and Sidi Gaber stations. He pointed out that this project will reduce the travel time from 60 to 35 minutes as a result of increasing the operating speed from 11 km/h to 21 km/h and reducing the headway time from (9) minutes to (3) minutes. Besides, it will contribute to increasing the number of passengers from 4,700 passengers/hour/direction to 13,800 passengers/hour/direction in addition to improving transportation services in Alexandria and achieving smooth traffic movement and preserving the environment, adding that last June a contract was signed with the Korean company Hyundai Rotem to manufacture and supply 30 tram units for the project, as the design work for the moving units is currently underway. It is worth noting that this signing comes a few days of signing the agreement to localize and supply 21 metro train units, comprising 189 cars, for Alexandria Metro project, the construction work of which is currently underway for the 1st phase, with a length of 21.7 km from Abu Qir Railway Station to Misr Station in Alexandria. This is within the framework of the Ministry of Transport’s comprehensive plan to establish a network of sustainable, green, environmentally friendly mass transportation in Alexandria.
