The Arab Contractors as one of the leading organizations
in the Middle East and Africa has a comprehensive heritage of experience that extends
over 50 years. The responsibility of steering such an organization in a turbulent
market that is affected by the political, economical and social circumstances changes
as well as the increased competition that is quite demanding and requires non-conventional
approaches
Innovative approaches that build on our legacy were adopted in some instances. However
in many instances the surrounding environment mandated re-engineering the existing
processes in order to cater for the market’s needs. During the last five years,
The Arab Contractors has tackled its problems fiercely and honestly, and induced
major reforms in its financial structure. Financial re-structuring enabled our organization
to increase its competitiveness and overcome many problems. There is a clear separation
between ownership and management in the organization, as the company is owned by
the government. This has enabled the management to adopt the private sector frame
of thoughts in an efficient and transparent manner. These steps have enabled us
to change the company’s image in order to reflect its efficiency and effectiveness
in the construction industry.
Along the technical stance; quality, safety and environment were the main dimensions
along which we have improved/re-engineered our processes. We have maintained and
increased our reputation as a quality driven organization both nationally and internationally.
Training, as a preventive activity, has been encouraged either in The Arab Contractors
Training Institute or internationally through realistic training programs that link
these programs to our needs. We have re-engineered safety activities within the
organization with the aim of creating a safer work place for the workers as well
as for the public. This has been achieved through an efficient awareness program
to our employees so that they start to believe the negative implications of not
complying with safety regulations. Besides our specialized department for the environment,
we have been able to increase our active participation in this worldwide issue through
numerous projects. Research and development is a corner stone in our activities,
whereby our organization has sponsored many applied research projects in cooperation
with universities in Egypt and internationally.
Among the activities that have improved over the last five years, we are specifically
proud towards our consultancy department, M/E activities, restoration of monuments,
and manufacturing of construction equipment (e.g. concrete plants, asphalt plants,
etc). Acknowledging our need to transfer technology in some aspects and increase
our competitive edge, we have been engaged in many successful partnership schemes
with organizations all over the world.
These efforts were crowned recently by granting The Arab Contractors the order of
Merit from the first degree by H.E. the President of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, in recognition
of our efforts in construction of two fast track tunnels in the downtown area of
Cairo. On the international arena, our ranking has moved up more than 30 positions,
to be number 88 according to the ranking performed by prestigious ENR magazine in
2005.
We are looking to the future with hope and expect to be able to increase our market
share in the Middle East and Africa in the coming years whilst maintaining our reputation
as one of the major contractors in the Middle East.
