Al-Azhar road tunnel project is a main artery newly constructed to help in protecting the Islamic monument district by moving and transmitting the greatest pollution source created by the heavy car traffic passing through El-Azhar district.
The project consists of two parallel road tunnels connecting Cairo city center with ( its south and north regions ) the axis North South Salah Salem. Each tunnel is 2665m length, 6m lane width with an internal diameter of 8,35m. The two tunnels are equipped with a pedestrian link tunnel, emergency sliding exits to underroad rescue circuit, fire extinguishers, emergency shoulders, ventilation stations, control rooms with monitoring systems, emergency telephones and alarms. The project was executed by a JV between AC and a group of French companies.
